1977 – Tom Robinson Band Plays in Stoke and Stafford

The Tom Robinson Band were a British rock band, established in 1976.

The band’s debut single “2-4-6-8 Motorway” was a top five hit on the UK Singles Chart in 1977 and their debut album, “Power in the Darkness” (1978) peaked at number 4 in the UK album charts.

Tom Robinson was openly gay and his songs often reflect gay themes, social politics and a fight for gay rights. The song “Glad to Be Gay” was recorded in 1977 and released in early 1978 on an EP with three other tracks. It is widely regarded to be a British national gay anthem.

In 1977 the Tom Robinson Band were due to play in Stafford as part of their national tour. Things didn’t quite go to plan and they ended up playing at Stoke Polytechnic on Wed 19th October instead. A few months later they returned to play at The Top of the World in Stafford on Sunday 4th December.  Were you at either of these gigs? We’d love to hear from you!
