2024 – Trip to Manchester

A fabulous trip exploring our LGBT+ history and heritage including a guided tour of Manchester Art Gallery and a visit to the archives.

OLGBT+ met with researchers from U of M’s Centre for Sexuality and Culture to talk about their research and our feedback.

Groundbreaking brochures and booklets at the Archive. We saw a booklet from the 1950s, in which the author included his home address—this became the first organised community connection.

Plenty of leather benches and portable seats at the gallery. The guide was excellent!

At Manchester Art Gallery, a tour guide Alia told the LGBT+ stories for 6 different works of art. Here’s. Jarman piece that takes on Manchester police chief’s infamous “cesspool” comments. (Unfamiliar? Search for it online.)

We finished the day with a walk from the Library Archive back to Manchester Piccadilly station by way of the Christmas markets.
