1856 – A Female in Male Attire in Longton

In 1856 Julia Ann Lilley was arrested by police in Longton and brought before a magistrate. Her “offence” consisted of  playing a game of “pitch and toss” with boys in the street while wearing male attire. In this post we explore a compelling story of Julia’s troubled life as a woman that preferred to dress as a man.
