Derbyshire LGBT+ History Project

DerbyshireLGBT+ has successfully acquired funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to undertake two history projects. Both projects will form an important part of Derbyshire’s heritage, providing new insights and narratives which have historically been underrepresented.

The first project, entitled “Our Stories: Discovering our hidden LGBT+ history” will focus on uncovering the hidden histories of LGBT+ individuals across Derbyshire. Through the collection of oral histories, archival research, and community engagement, the project will ensure that the contributions, challenges, and lived experiences of LGBT + people are acknowledged and safeguarded for future generations.

The second, “Our Stories: Discover our hidden HIV history”, will investigate and record the impact of HIV on local communities. This project aims to illuminate the social, cultural, and medical history of HIV in the county, capturing the resilience of those affected, remembering those who succumbed to the disease.

We are looking for individuals who would be interested in getting involved in any capacity, such as:

  • Volunteering with us (these individuals do not have to be from Derbyshire), within roles such as, research, transcribing, archive and interviewer.
  • Individuals who are from Derbyshire and are interested in being interviewed.
  • Anyone who may have any relevant objects they would be happy to loan or donate for exhibitions, such as badges, leaflets, t-shirts, banners, etc
  • We are also open to people who don’t fully want to get involved but would like to contact us for pointers and helpful information for us to continue our research.

If you are interested in getting involved or just want to chat about our project, please contact: Heritage@derbyshirelgbt.org.uk or phone us on 01332 207 704
